Hanna, Mary

Evening Kansan-Republican

Mrs. Mary Hanna, wife of George Hanna, Sr., the well-known contractor of Newton, passed away about 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon at her home at 416 East Eighth street after an illness of nine days of influenza. Her death has brought sorrow into many homes in Newton where her friendship has been so lovingly cherished. While it was known that she was quite ill her friends had entertained hopes that she might have sufficient vitality to overcome the effects of the disease. However, those nearest to her who realized what she had endured in her recent bereavement in the loss of a brother and a sister knew how much her resistance had been lessened. She seemed to feel almost from the first of her illness that she would be summoned from earthly life and showed her reconciliation in being ready for death and conscious to the last she passed away peacefully.

Mary Coyne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. Coyne, was born in St. Louis, Ill., April 14, 1867. Mr. and Mrs. Coyne brought their family to Florence, Kansas to reside and it was there that their daughter Mary received her education. She was one of a class of three in the first graduation class of the high school of Florence and later taught in the schools there. She was united in marriage to George Hanna of Newton May 24, 32 years ago and came to Newton to reside and and her home had been here continuously since that time. She was the mother of eleven children and nine with the husband survive her. George Jr., whose home is on North Pine street, and the others in the family circle at home, Zelda, Frances, Mary, Leo, Genevieve, Bernardine, Harold, and Harry, the youngest, aged 13 years. Other relatives who will suffer her loss too are her aged mother Mrs. P. Coyne, a sister, Miss Kate Coyne of Florence, and James Coyne, a brother, of Peabody. Nine weeks ago her brother Ed Coyne died and four weeks ago her sister, Miss Ellen Coyne of Florence, died in a hospital in Newton.

Her funeral service will be held at St. Mary's church, Monday morning at 10-o'clock. The casket will not be opened then but friends may see her at the family residence at any time after Sunday morning.

Mrs. Hanna's life was a life of ideal motherhood and beautiful in its depth of spirituality. From the time her little ones could lisp their prayers at her knee her foremost thought and guiding hand had been to keep their ideals of life toward the perfect and thus to form their strength of character and she was given the blessing of living to have her children a comfort to her and to enjoy the happiness that is present in such a family circle.

As a neighbor and friend, never was there a time when she missed an opportunity of doing good, and the many lives with which she had come in contact, have been made the better because of her example and her memory will be treasured by the many because of her acts of kindness. She was a very devout member of St. Mary's church, belonging to its organizations, and active always in all interests in church work.
