George Eugene Wickersham, 81, of Newton, died Tuesday (Feb. 13, 2007) at Halstead Health and Rehabilitation.
He was born June 21, 1925, in Amarillo, Texas, to George Eugene Wickersham Sr. and Gertrude Elizabeth (Harrison) Wickersham. On Oct. 18, 1958, he married Marguerite C. (Peg) Tangeman. After graduating from Sedgwick High School in 1943, he joined the Navy and served until the end of World War II. Upon returning to Newton, he worked at the Berry Hatchery. In 1957, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service and worked at the Newton Post Office until his retirement in 1980. In his younger years, he enjoyed baseball, golf, bowling and fishing. He was a member of the American Legion and the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son James (Jim) Wickersham, wife, Esly, and granddaughter Katherine of Tegucigalpa, Honduras; a daughter, Elizabeth Grisham, husband Rodger and grandchildren Kevin and Rachel of Columbus, Neb.; brother Robert Challans and wife Elsie of Halstead; brother-in-law, Jim Tangeman and wife Sandy of Wichita; sister-in-law Winifred Frey and husband Merle of Perryton, Texas; and brother-in-law Steve Tangeman; wife Susie of Sioux Fall, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at First Presbyterian Church in Newton. Visitation was from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Memorials are suggested to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund or the donor's choice.
