Joyce E. Sims, 75, died Monday (Dec. 6, 2010) at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
She was born on July 30, 1935, in Hillsdale, Okla., to Robert Henry and Lucille (Swisher) Kindt. On Jan. 15, 1971, she married Keith Sims in Newton, and he survives of the home. Joyce was a longtime active member of First Christian Church in Newton. She served as treasurer of the church, in the choir and was a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. Joyce was a homemaker and also worked at the former First National Bank in Newton. She also ran a clothes ironing business out of her home. She enjoyed sewing and reading. She also enjoyed trips to Branson, Mo., especially Silver Dollar City. Family was very important to Joyce, and she greatly looked forward to spending time with her loving family and many friends.
Joyce also is survived by her sons, Mike Haviland of Newton, Gary Haviland of Wichita and David and his wife Martha Haviland of Whitewater; daughters, Pamela and Michael Whalen of Mesquit, Texas, and Annette and Ronald Allee of Viola; brothers, William and Larry Kindt of Lawton, Okla., and Leon Kindt of Yelm, Wash.; sisters, Janet Mulley of Dunnellon, Fla., Linda Killiam of Enid, Okla., and Carol Johnson of Apollo Beach, Fla. Joyce has 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter-in-law Phyllis Haviland and great-granddaughter Kinsie Whalen.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Bell presiding. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Memorials may be left with First Christian Church in care of the funeral home.
