Gannon, Mynettia



Mynettia Lucille Gannon, 94, a former resident of Fort Scott, passed away on Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2011) at the Wheat State Manor in Whitewater.

She was born on Feb. 13, 1916, in Oklahoma City, the daughter of Walter G. “Lefty” Davis and Birdie Estelle Gruver Davis. She first married Gerald F. Jones on Jan. 18, 1935. They later were divorced. She then married Aubra Lewis Gannon on April 16, 1943, in Miami, Okla. He preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1991.

During World War II, Mr. and Mrs. Gannon had worked in the shipyards in California. They returned to Fort Scott and bought a farm west of town. Ann remained on her farm until the mid 1990s when she moved to Potwin to be near her daughter. While living in Fort Scott, Ann worked as a bookkeeper and office manager for Atkins Insurance Agency for 19 years. She later served as secretary to the county engineer. In earlier years, she was active with the Business and Professional Women’s Association and was selected Business Woman of the Week on Nov. 30, 1968, and Business Woman of the Year in 1977. She was an active member of the Assembly of God Church in Fort Scott where she served as Sunday school secretary and taught an adult Sunday school class. She was a member of First Christian Church of Potwin. Ann enjoyed oil painting and gardening.

She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Anne Hill and husband, Charlie of Springfield, Mo.; Peggy Anne Gannon of Denver and Susan Hanzlicek and husband, Lynn of Potwin; a son, Gerald Lee Jones and wife, Elizabeth of California; a step-daughter, Betty Mae Welborn of Franktown, Colo.; and a step-son, Edgar Lewis Gannon of Wheatridge, Colo. Also surviving are a brother, Paul Davis of Uniontown and a sister, Wanda Embry of Fort Scott; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Wayne Gannon; two brothers, Walter and Floyd Davis; and a sister, Violet Burdette.

A local visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday (Jan. 7) at Lamb Funeral Home in Whitewater. Pastor Steve Bowman will conduct graveside services at 1:30 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 8) at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Ft. Scott. Family and friends may meet at the Cheney Witt Chapel from 12:30 p.m. until leaving for the cemetery at 1:15 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Wheat State Manor and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main St., P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701.
