Obituary

Agnes A. Davis, 97, died on Sunday (Jan. 16, 2011) at Asbury Park Greenhouses in Newton.

She was born on Aug. 4, 1913, in Angeles to Anthony and Amelia (Ladenburger). She married Rolland E. Davis on Oct. 29, 1935, and he preceded her in death. Agnes worked at Careful Cleaners in Colby and as a cook at Colby High School and Sacred Heart School, both in Colby. She retired in 1980 and moved to Newton to be closer to her family. Agnes was a lifelong Catholic and member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton, where she was an active member of the Daughter’s of Isabella and the Altar Society. She had a love of sewing and crafts. She enjoyed making quilts and sharing them with her family and friends.

Agnes is survived by one son, Robert Davis of Newton; one daughter, Darlene Davis of Newton; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Pracht; five sisters, Mathilda Flipsy and Isabel Berry, both of Oregon, Bernadette Hammond of Emporia, Orvella Schreiner of Dodge City and Betty Vance of Bettenddorf, Iowa; sister-in-law, Janice Baalman of Grinnel; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents; infant child; son, Gerald Davis; and three brothers, Gene, Leonard and Dave Baalman.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton. The Rev. Jim Mainzer will preside. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Colby. The Rev. Dana Clark will preside. Memorials may be left with St. Mary’s Caring on the Faith School Building Fund in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
