Grove, Theodora

The Newton Kansan

Kansan, Tuesday, September 18, 1951

Miss Theodora Grove, lifelong resident of Newton and a veteran teacher in the city's public school system, died at noon today at Axtell Christian Hospital following an illness of several weeks. She last entered the hospital eight days ago.

Her teaching career covered a span of 37 years, including one year in a county school and the past 36 years as a teacher of biology and home nursing in Newton high school. She retired at end of the spring term this year, due to ill health.

Born June 29, 1890, Miss Grove was the daughter of William E. and Maria Grove, a pioneer Newton family, and was past 61 years of age. The home is at 224 East First street.

She was educated in the local schools, was graduated from the University of Kansas in 1914 and took graduate work at the University of Chicago. Throughout her long service she taught and counseled hundreds of students.

One of her chief interests was in directing the activities of the Girl Reserve organization, of which she was sponsor for many years.

Miss Grove was a member of the First Presbyterian church and the Martha Strickler Guild, the American Association of University Women, the Newton Teachers club and other school organizations.

Her late father was a pioneer grocer here and later served as clerk of the district court.

She is survived by a brother, Dr. John L. Grove; and two nephews, Dr. Jack A. Grove and Dr. William E. Grove, and their families, all of Newton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 4:30 at the Presbyterian church. Rev. George W. Nelson will officiate and burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. The casket will not be open.

The family requests that no flowers be sent as Miss Grove enjoyed a generous outpouring of flowers while she could enjoy them. Instead, it is suggested that friends who might be inclined could make some memorial gift to the high school Girl Reserve projects.
