John J. Hagen, 78, pioneer Newton resident, died this morning at Bethel Deaconess Hospital. He had been hospitalized for a week. His home was at 417 E. 6th St.

A retired plastering contractor, Mr. Hagen was born July 11, 1881 at Peabody, the son of John J. and Susan E. Hagen.

He was married June 7, 1904 at Canada, Kas., to Christine Knittle and moved to Newton that same year. He was a member of the First Methodist church.


Survivors include his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Marion) Snyder of Oklahoma, City; a grandson, Ralph Snyder Jr., and a great grandson, Harry Snyder, both of Kansas City, Kans.; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Grose of Alberta, Canada and Mrs. Martha Tinneman of Enid, Okla.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Draper's Funeral Home. The Rev. Clarence J. Borger will officiate and entombment will be in Greenwood Abby.
