James Max DuFriend Sr.

James Max DuFriend Sr., 85, died Monday (Aug. 12, 2002) at Presbyterian Manor.


He was born March 18, 1917, to Albert Harmon and Bessie (James) DuFriend in Salina. They preceded him in death. He married Ellen Jane Linnens July 4, 1936, in Newton. She preceded him in death June 23, 2000.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newton. He worked as fireman for the city of Newton and Boeing and retired from the Newton Railmill as a blacksmith after 29 1/2 years. After retirement he worked as a handyman for his friends and neighbors. He enjoyed music and had a good singing voice. He enjoyed listening to the Lawrence Welk television show. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include: three daughters, Jennifer and Butch Hammett of Newton, Janell and Kenneth Walsh of Owings, Md., and Denise Nail of Kansas City, Kan.; three sons, Dallas and Cheryl DuFriend of Overland Park, David and Suzanne DuFriend of Atascadero, Calif., and James Max Jr. and Darin DuFriend of California; a sister, Betty Lou Sturm of Newton; 22 grandchildren, Melissa and Derrick Walsh-Burmirster, Michelle Foster, Kenneth and Tina Walsh Jr., Chip and Daynna DuFriend, Jeremy Hammett, Holly Hammett, April Gray, Shellie and Jeff Taylor, Darcie and Radley Brooks, Aimee and John Wiggins, Dierdre DuFriend, Nathen DuFriend, Paula and Tim Rademacher, Julie and Pat Jeter, Susie DuFriend, Lisa DuFriend, James DuFriend III, Lucinda and Ricky Dodd, Beth and Steve Schrag, Jamie and Patrick DuFriend, Megan and Bryan La Bounty and Micalah DuFriend; and 34 great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by: a brother, Duke DuFriend; and two sisters, Helen Nye and Jean Onstott.

Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, all at Petersen Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Petersen Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Rich officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
