Pauline M. (Brown) Curteman, 90, of Newton, died Thursday (Jan. 28, 2010) at Presbyterian Manor in Newton.
Pauline was born on Dec. 2, 1919 in Newton, to Joseph M. and Etta Mae (Gaston) Brown. "Pauly" attended school in Newton throughout her public-school years. She attended business school in Topeka and then moved to San Diego during World War II. She moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., after the war. When she returned to Newton, she worked at Newton High School, Rhodes Construction Co., American Flours, the city of Newton and for Dr. Lee S. Fent. She taught business machines and office procedures for the Newton USD 373 in the Adult Education Program. "Pauly" married Marven J. Curteman Jr. on Aug. 14, 1955, in Newton. He died on Dec. 13, 1998. She and Marven were members of First Christian Church and were active in a wide variety of missions and programs in the church. They sponsored Chi Rho, a program for teens; transported youngsters to camp in the summers; delivered communion to shut-ins; served on the pulpit committee; and taught Sunday school.
They delivered Meals on Wheels for Senior Services. She served as advocate for elder adults through RSVP.
Most of all, Pauly cherished her family. She always was eager to host gatherings of the family and its extended members on holidays or when someone was coming to visit from out of town. She wanted the generations to stay connected. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and a loyal friend. Pauly is survived by her children, Gary C. Curteman of the Philippines, Sherry C. King and husband Jak of Vancouver, B.C., Canada; stepdaughter Gail C. Cole and husband Joe of Sanger, Calif.; and brothers and sisters Jean Quilty of Wichita, Susan Brown of Bartlesville, Okla., J. Ralph Brown of Salina, Clifford Earl Brown and wife Shari of Overland Park, Joseph Murray Brown and wife Terry of Overland Park, and Michael D. Brown and wife Gloria of Newton. She leaves five grandchildren: Eric Curteman and family of Colorado, Jason Curteman and wife Maiko of Kansas City, Jeanne Elizabeth Kelly and husband Boyd of California, Nicholas P. Sharp and wife Karla of Wichita, and Logan Curteman of Cebu City, Philippines. She has three great-grandchildren, Will Curteman, Leela Curteman and Dustin Montgomery. In addition, Pauly is survived by two sisters-in-law, Malinda (Lelus) Regier Brown of Newton and Helen Ferguson of Tulsa, Okla. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Lelus Brown; and great-grandson Riley Paul Sharp. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Newton. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas or "The Fellowship of John" at Kansas Christian Home.
