Beaty, Claude



Mr. and Mrs. Sam H. Beaty received a telegram from the War Department Feb. 6, 1945, stating that their son. Staff Sergeant Claude H. Beaty, had been killed in action in France Jan. 6, 1945. He had previously been reported missing in action on that date.

Claude had benn in the service since July 7, 1941. He was assigned ti the Coast Artillery Ballon Barrage Battalion and was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Wash., until December, 1943. He entered Cadet training at Wittenburg College, Springfield, Ohio, in February, 1944, was transfered back to the ground forces, infantry division, a few weeks later. He left the states for overseas duty in October, 1944. He was a member of the 100th Division of the Seventh Army.

Claude was 26 years of age. He was born April 3, 1918. He was graduated from the Halstead high school with the class of 1936. He was a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the basketball team. After his graduation from high school, Claude was employed with W. A. Lee, and at the time he entered the service, he was employed by the D and F hardware.

Besides his parents, Claude leaves four sisters, Zelma, Beaty,, Ford, Kan.; Mrs. Robert E. Lee, Halstead; Mrs. J. F. Weatherford, Ottumwa, Iowa, and Staff Sgt. Vera F. Beaty, With a WAC detachment in New Guinea; and many other relatives and a host of friends.

Memorial services were held Sunday afternoon, Feb. 18, 1945, at 2:30 in the Halstead Methodist church with Rev. A. C. Brown in charge of the services.
