Long, Lucille

The Newton Kansan

Lucille Long of Kansas Christian Home went to be with her Lord and Redeemer on Tuesday (Feb. 8, 2011) at the age of 96.

Born on Sept. 29, 1914, in Paris, Mo., to Elmer and Ruth Curtis, Lucille spent most of her life in Newton. She retired from the J.C. Penney Co. in Newton. Lucille was an active member of First Christian Church in Newton. She was a sweet lady with a spirit of willingness to go out of her way to help others. At one time, she was president of the Christian Women’s Fellowship, the Homebuilders Sunday school class and Progressive Mother’s Club. During World War II, Lucille was very involved in the American Red Cross Canteen FCC Chapter, an organization giving ministry to our servicemen. Lucille also was a member of the Harvey County Historical Society.

Lucille married J. Warren Long on June 2, 1935, in Newton. He preceded her in death on Sept. 28, 1974.

Survivors include two sons, John Long and his wife, Becky of Wichita, and James Long and his wife, Larissa of Lawrence; a sister, June Scott; and a niece, Sara Copp, both of Topeka.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday (Feb. 11), where the family will be present from 6 to 7 p.m. A memorial service celebrating Lucille’s life will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday (Feb 12) at Kansas Christian Home. The Rev. Denny Bell will officiate. A private burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Kansas Christian Home for the “Legacy of John.” Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
