Howard, William D

The Burrton Free-Lance

David William, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Howard, was born at Eagleville, Harrison County, Missouri, February 1, 1881; died at Burrton, Kansas, April 13, 1911, age 30 years, 2 months and 12 days. With his parents he moved to Burrton in 1885 and has since made his home here. He leaves to mourn, a father and mother, two brothers and six sisters besides numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church, Saturday, and the body laid to rest in Burrton cemetery. Young Will Howard will be greatly missed, especially among the young men of the town with whom he has associated for years. It can truly be said of him that his enemies were few and his friends legions.

His death was a most distressing tragedy ever enacted in this community.  Young "Bill" Howard was shot and instantly killed by a weapon held in the hands of his father, William Howard, Sr.  The accident occured in the Robinson pasture about five miles northwest of Burrton.  The two men were shooting ducks when Young Bill arose from the ground just as the father fired his last shot.  The bullet blowed a portion of his skull away.  The father tore off his coat and bound it about the head of the boy, jumped into the spring wagon and raced his team to the home of J. B. Froese.  A doctor was called and the father completely collapsed and remained in an unconscious state until Saturday.  Father and son were congenial companions and had hunted, fished and trapped together for years.  Young Bill was a skilled taxidermist and had one otthe finest collections of stuffed birds, beast and fishes evere exhibited in Kansas.
