Joseph, Charles Branine

The Newton Kansan

Charles Branine Joseph, 86, farmer and stockman,died Saturday (Dec. 25, 1999) at Newton.

He was born July 3, 1913, at Axtell Christian Hospital in Newton to Charles Rufus and Annie (Branine) Joseph. He married Jean Bishop July 24, 1942, at Federated Church in Whitewater. She survives of Potwin. He graduated from Potwin High School and The University of Kansas, where he received his law degree. He was a member of Federated Church in Whitewater, Phi Gamma Delta, Potwin Lions Club and El Dorado Rotary Club. He served on the Potwin Kansas School board and board of unification of the Fredric Remington USD 206, where he was president of the board for a number of years. He was elected to the state senate from 1956 to 1968. He also served as minority leader during his last term. In 1970 he was appointed to the state board of tax appeals and served until he retired in 1984. He was past president. He enjoyed hunting and fishing on the family farm.

Other survivors include: three sons, Alan Joseph of Wichita, Fredric Joseph of Whitewater and Robert Joseph of Estes Park, Colo.; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Federated Church in Whitewater with the Rev. Rick McNary officiating.
Friends may call until 8:30 p.m. today at Bob Lamb Funeral Home Chapel in Whitewater. Memorials have been established with Federated Church and the Wheat State Manor Van Fund in care of the funeral home.
