Sump, Arthur

History

Mr. and Mrs. August Sump, of Newton, received a telegraph message from the war department, signed by J. A. Ulio, adjutant general, telling them with regret of the death of their son, Corporal Arthur H. Sump, who died of dysentery in a hospital on Leyte Island, Philippine, Islands, where he had been for nine days. Previously he was in a forward hospital a month. The death took place on May 12, 1945. The message followed a previous one which told of Corporal Sump being ill and in a hospital. The last message came while Mr. and Mrs. Sump were visiting their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Volkmann, at Medford, Okla. They went to Medford at the time because their grandson Mardis Volkmann was at home on leave. He was on the carrier Franklin when she was attacked by the Jap dive bombers, and rode the vessel all the way across the Pacific. He did not receive a scratch in the explosions that followed the attack. Corporal Sump, who was a medical aide, rescued two wounded infantry men and managed to get them to safety and first aid, though under constant and quite heavy Jap sniper fire. His friends and those of his parents and family have the sympathy of a host of friends because of the young soldier's untimely death from sickness.
