Services for Edwin B. Edwards, 90, formerly of 14 Cedar Dr., Newton, who died Friday morning at Axtell Christian Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Petersens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. L. Roger Todd officiating. Burial will be for family members only.
He was born Feb. 12, 1890 in Monticello, Ark., the son of Hugh and Lulu Edwards. After his schooling in Monticello, he located in Wichita where he joined KG&E and worked for the company in several locations including Sedgwick, El Dorado, Cherryvale and moved to Newton April 1, 1928. He retired as division manager March 1, 1955, after serving 43 years with the company.
He was a member of the First united Presbyterian Church, had life membership in the Newton Masonic Lodge, life membership in Wichita Consistory, life membership in Median Shrine Temple in Wichita, served two separate terms as president of the Newton Chamber of Commerce, was president of the Newton Country Club, was a charter member and president of the Newton Kiwanis Club, was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Axtell Christian Hospital board for 23 years, a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board for 20 years, a former member of the board of directors of Railroad Savings and Loans Association. After his retirement, he served four years as city commissioner and was mayor for one term.
He married Mary Ellen Wilks who survives of the Presbyterian Manor. Other survivors include one son J. Wesly Edwards of Rogers, Ark.
