Obituary

NEWTON — H. Allan Mills, 90, of Newton, died on Thursday (April 28, 2011) at the Presbyterian Manor in Newton.
He was born “Henry Allan Mills” on July 3, 1920, in Newton, the son of Henry Edward and Rosetta Mae Wolfe Mills. His parents died when he was a child, and he was raised by his maternal grandparents, John and Hannah Jane Wolfe.
Allan attended schools in Newton, graduating from Newton High School in 1938; he later attended Bethel College and Washburn College. He married Charlene Mattix, who had two sons. They later divorced. On June 28, 1989, Allan married a life-long friend, Virginia Hayes, who had two daughters.
During World War II, Allan served in the U.S. Army. After being discharged from the military, he returned to Newton and worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 35 years before retiring in 1983.
Allan was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir and had served as an elder. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and he sang in the Newton Barbershop Chorus and the Hutchinson Chorus. Allan and Virginia enjoyed traveling, including a trip to England in 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Newton; two step-sons, Gary Mattix of Houston, Texas, and Richard Gene Mattix of Merriam; two step-daughters, Jan Smith Meyer of Franklin Lakes, N.J., and Kristi Danegger of West Hartford, Conn.; three nieces, Betty J. Mills Skaggs of Pratt, Sylvia M. Mills Wilber of Charlotte, N.C., and Judith K. Mills Alterman of Wichita.
Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
