Sorrow came into many Newton homes Wednesday evening when the announcement was received that H. G. Arnold, former superintendent of the Santa Fe here and for many years a resident of Newton, had died at an Emporia hospital that afternoon at 4:30, following a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist church in Emporia, Saturday morning at 10:00 with Rev. Clyde S. Clark in charge, after which Mr. Arnold will be brought overland to Newton and will lie in state at the Moody,s Funeral Chapel from 1:30 to 2:30. Brief services with taps will be held at the family crypts in Greenwood Abbey at 3:00, with Rev. Forrest E. Rohl in charge.

Mr. Arnold and family were affiliated with the Methodist church, and he was a member of the various bodies of the Masonic fraternity, and a veteran of the Spanish American war.

Mr. Arnold is survived by his wife Mavis, two sons and two daughters, Norman H. Arnold, Emporia; Mrs. Delay Heath, Emporia; Mrs. J. T. Russell, Galesburg, Ill.; John W. Arnold, Morrison, Colo. Also a sister Mrs. Frank Glass, Uniontown, Ala. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold were married at Little Rock, Ark., Oct. 2, 1910.

Henry Goodwin Arnold was born at Livingston, Ala., April 5, 1881 and was approaching 70 years of age. He had a long meritorious record of service with the Santa Fe Railroad, and was recognized as an authority on rules and the techniques of railroad operation. He entered Santa Fe service as operator and dispatcher on the Oklahoma division May 4, 1914. Was made trainmaster of the Oklahoma division May 15, 1919, and came to the middle division in Newton as trainmaser April 6, 1923. He was assigned to the important work of rules examiner with offices in Topeka, March 10, 1930, and returned to Newton as trainmaser Aug. 1, 1931. He was appointed superintendent at Emporia Oct. 11, 1937, superintendent of the Illinois-Missouri division at Chillicothe, May 5, 1940, returning to Newton as superintendent of the Middle division, July 16, 1942, serving in that capacity until his retirement because of illness, July 1, 1949.

Mr. and Mrs. Arnold owned their last home in Newton on West Tenth street, where they enjoyed quiet continent among friends, going to Emporia, to be near their children living there, April 13, 1950.
