Dr. Inghram Miller, retired dentist, departed this life Nov. 1, 2009, at St. Frances Via Christi Hospital in Wichita.
He was born June 10, 1923, to Glen Miller and Jesse Inghram Miller. He was a fourth generation Newtonian; his mother's family pioneered here in 1870. His fathers family came a few years later, and his grandfather, Dr. Max Miller started a medical practice in Newton in 1884. The Miller family had a residence at 205 Allison in Newton, since 1894: Inghram and his wife, Joyce, resided there all their married life. Inghram Miller was very proud of his heritage and often reminisced about it.
A Newton High School graduate, he attended Bethel College for two years, then attended The University of Kansas and the University of Missouri, where he graduated from the School of Dentistry.
Dr. Miller was a member of the American, Kansas and Harvey County Dental Associations, District Dental Society, Federation Dentaire Internationale and the Christian Medical Society. In 1948, he served for six months on the Kansas State Board of Health, Dental Division.
Inghram Miller enjoyed his Scottish heritage. He was a member of the Royal Society of Health of the United Kingdom and, in 1966, passed the Healing Arts Practice Board certification in Edinburgh, Scotland.
During the Korean War, he served as a captain for three years in the Army dental corps and, in the summer of 1950, served on the Health Council of Indian Affairs at Juneau, Alaska. In 1974-75, he was listed in "Whos Who in the Mid-West".
After his military duty in the 1950s, he practiced dentistry at 205 S. Main St. in Newton. His wife, Joyce was his office manager and main assistant. She preceded him in death on Aug. 3, 2007.
He was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church and served as an elder there.
He is survived by nieces Marilyn Pattison of Overland Park and Annette J. McLaughlin of Prairie Village; and nephew, Max I. Miller Jr. of Breckenridge, Colo.
Following cremation, his ashes will be buried in the family plot in Greenwood Cemetery. Services will be private.
