Manhold, Johanna

The Newton Kansan

Kansan, Thursday, July 23, 1936.

Johanna Strauss was born in West Prussia, Germany, December 6, 1880.

She came to America in August, 1890 and soon after her arrival she married John Manhold, taking over the responsibilities of a home and the care of his four motherless children, who with the one daughter born to them, survive.

She was a member of the Lutheran church before coming to America and she affiliated with the German Evangelical church in Newton.

The family later resided in the vicinity of Brainerd in the Butler county for a number of years, and for nineteen years lived in Newton.

Since the death of her husband in November, 1927, she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Charles Chambers family.

There remain to mourn her passing the three sons, John of Conway Springs, Kansas. Jake and Pete of Petaluma, Calif., and two daughters, Mrs. Anna Eilert of Furley and Mrs. Mary Chambers of near Whitewater; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She passed away after a short illness of heat prostration, July 18, 1936.
