Showalter, Henry



Henry Muser Showalter was born in Lancaster County, Pa., Feb. 22nd, 1845and died at his home in Newton, Aug. 6, 1925, after a lingering illness.
When a child he moved with his parents to Wayne county, Ohio, and later to Elkhart, Ind. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Winger, Jan. 28, 1868, and they became the parents of seven children Sam of Drummond, Okla., Adam of Walton, Kan., Mary Stewart of Newton, Otey of Emporia, Alta Marti of Kansas City Mo., Salina Lewis of Newton and Raney of Pittsburg, Kan. All the children are living and were at his bedside at his death.
After leaving Elkhart, Mr. Showalter and his family moved to Illinois and then to Kansas in August in 1886, coming to Newton, and Harvey county wich has been their home continuously since. Mr. Showalter was engaged in farming until 1904 when he and his family moved to Newton, and he became employed by the Santa Fe Railway company, remaining in its service a number of years.
He and his companion united with the Brethren church in 1882, and he has been a faithful member ever since, living the life of a sincere christian daily, and proving an ideal example for his family.
Besides his wife and children he leaves ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, an aged Aunt Mrs. Anna Kurtz of New Holland, Pa., one brother Sam of Spokane, Wash., and a sister Mrs. Susie Miller of idaho, and in addition a large number of friends and relatives.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, Aug. 8, at the Brethren church, conducted by the Rev. B. F. Miller, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Weaver of the Pennsylvania Mennonite church. Short services were held at the home in wich Dr. James McKee of Washington D.C., Paid a sincere tribute to the life of a long time friend. A quartet from the Hesston College sang comforting hyms. The pall bearers were the four sons and two grandsons, Paul Marti and Robert Showalter, Mr. Showalter was laid to rest at Greenwood cemetery.
