Stewart, Mary
Mary Ann (Showalter) Stewert, widow of Judge C. H. Stewart, died Sunday morning at 4 o'clock at Axtell Christian Hospital. She Had been in ill health for sometime and had been hospitalized since March 21. mrs Stewart resided at 1403 North Main street.
Boen September 17, 1872 in Cerro Gordo, Ill., she was past 78 years of age. Her parents were Henry and Elizabeth Showalter.
She lived in Newton as a young girl and returned here in 1923, residing here continuously since that time. She and Mr. Stewart were married here on August 28, 1898. Mr. Stewart, who served as justice of the peace for a number of years and later as county probate judge, died 28, 1946.
Mrs. Stewart was active in the church and club circles. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church, and the Anna Ellen Miassionary society of the church, the order of the Eastern Star, Royal Neighbors, Past Noble Grand of the Rebecca lodge and was past president of the Themian club.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Dwight (Elizabeth) Eells, and two grandsons, Dwight Eells, Jr., and Hoyt Stewart Eells, all of Newton; a sister, Mrs. Harold Lewis, of Newton; and four brothers, Sam Showalter of Winfield, Rev. O. M. Showalter of Huntington Park, Calif., and Raney Showalter of Pittsburg, Kansas.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock at Moody's funeral chapel. Rev. George W. Nelson will officiate and burial will be in the family lot at Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral chapel anytime Tuesday afternoon or evening.
