Dalton, Susan Inez

Halstead Independent

Susal Inez Williams was born June 23, 1861 near Montgomery, Alabma, daughter of Wm. Lafayette and Virginia Williams and was one of a family of ten children.

The family moved to Kansas when the state was young and undeveloped. They settled on a farm seven miles southwest of Halstead when the prairies were covered with grass and trees grew along the streams.

She married William Dalton in Newton May 29, 1879 and made their home on a farm five miles southwest of Halstead. There they planted trees and broke sod. She dearly loved the farm - the place where the crops grew and the cattle grazed in the pastures beside the creek. She moved to her recent home on South Chestnut in Halstead in 1926. Even there she was happiest when working in her garden or with her flowers.

She had a keen sense of humor and ready wit. Her friendly, frank nature-quite typical of pioneer people-made many friends over the years. The church was always of utmost importance in her life.

One daughter passed away February 21, 1890 at the age of niine years and two months. They later adopted a girl who was a niece to Inez. Her husband preceded her in death April 13, 1923. He was a Civil War veteran, and she was one of the last widows of a Civil War Veteran in this community.

Mrs. Dalton became seriously ill several weeks ago, following a heart attack. She was taken to the Halsteada hospital where she recovered sufficiently in a short time to return to her home. On Wednesday morning, July 31, at 5:15 a.m. she passed away quietly making here age 85 years, one month and eight days.

Survivors: daughter, Mrs. Bertha Lawrence and husband Harry of Halstead; one brother, Arthur B. Williams of Sedgwick; one sister, Mrs. Vida McDonald of Los Angeles, Calif; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Services were held at the First Methodist Church with Rev. W. W. Owen in charge. She was laid to rest in the Halstead cemetery by the side of her husband.
