Lawrence, Harry A.

Halstead Independent

Harry A. Lawrence was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania on Jan. 19. 1883, the only child of Mr. & Mrs. O. E. Lawrence. In 1887 the family moved to Gettysburg, So. Dakota, where they resided for ten years. In 1897 they came to Halstead to make their home where Harry attended school and graduated from Halstead High School. At the time of his passing, Mr. Lawrence had lived in the community for sixty years.

Harry A. Lawrence and Bertha M. Dalton were married May 21, 1904 amd made their home on a farm southwest of Halstead. To them three children were born, Paul R. Lawrence, Battle Creek, Michigan; Mrs. Gerald Pearson, Lawrence, Kansas and Mrs. Roy Cline of Halstead. There are six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Farming was the chief occupation of Mr. Lawrence from 1904 to 1943 when he and Mrs. Lawrence moved from the farm to Halstead. Later, he became interested in a number of Wichita properties which he managed, along with his farming interests, until the time of his death.

He was a devoted member of the Halstead Methodist Church where he accepted many responsibilities for service. He was a past master of the Halstead Lodge #46 A.F. and A.M., a member of the Halstead Odd Fellows, Rebekah, Eastern Star, the Wichita Consistory or Rite Masonry and president of the Halstead Cemetery Association.

Those who knew Harry Lawrence recognized his energy, thoughtfulness, and depth of understanding. He had unusual concern for the welfare of others and his time was spent generously in service to his church, his family. his friends and the community.

He was a quite man of deep faith, who used his life generously to help others, as well as attain the good life for himself and his family.

Funeral services were conducted from the Church on Tuesday afternoon, June 25, 1957 with his pastor, Rev. H. G. Feldmann in charge of the service. He was laid to rest in the family lot in the Halstead Cemetery where he had devoted so much time and energy as president of the Cemetery Association.
