Joseph S. Shields was born Dec. 9, 1846, in Frankfort, Ky., and died in San Diego, Calif., as the result of apoplexy. His body was brought to Newton, where funeral services were held, Tuesday afternoon Oct. 21, and burial was made in the Greenwood cemetery in this city. Mr. Shields was married to Miss. Margaret Anna Ditto, Sept. 15, 1874 in Brandenburg, Ky. To this union eight children were born, five of whom are still living. They are H. I. Shields of Lynwood, Calif., W. F. Shields of Grand Rapids, Mich., Thomas B. Shields of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Charles P. Jackson of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Lottie Lowe of Meacham, ore. One sister, Mrs. Blackburn of Indiana, seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren also survive. The deceased was a member of the Union army for four years and of the standing army for three years. He came to Newton in 1884 and lived in the city for 28 years. He moved to Portland, Ore., and then to San Diego, Calif., seven years ago. He was a member of the odd fellows lodge in Kentucky and had recently received the fifty-year jewel of the order.
