Matlack, Lizzie

Mrs. Ralph Matlack (Lizzie) was born Mary Elizabeth Emerick, daughter of Fred and Mary Emerick, on November 7, 1885. Her mother died in 1899, leaving Lizzie and her father to care for the three younger children.

She was married To Ralph Matlack on May 10, 1902. On October 26, 1910 she died in a house fire when she received burns from a gasoline iron in her home. The iron broke an oil lamp which set the ironing board on fire. In attempting to extinguish the flames, her own clothing became saturated with oil and caught fire. She went to the phone, called up central and then succeeded in putting out the fire by wrapping herself in bed clothes, but not until her clothing was destroyed and the entire survace of her body horribly burned. She died five hours later. Her three year old child ran out of the house when the fire started. She was the mother of three bright little children and the wife of a young farmer. They lived five miles south of Burrton.

She was laid to rest in the Burrton Cemetery.
