Schowalter, William F.
Halstead Independent
William Schowalter, well known local farmerr died Friday afternoon in St. Francis Hospital as the result of injuries he received in a farm machine accident.
Schowalter was using his tractor to help Ralph Ward start a combine when a gear box broke and a piece of metal struck him in the side of the jhead. Neither Ward on the combine, nor Bus Westerman, who was assisting was injured. The injured man was taken to the Halstead Hospital in the Halstead ambulance. Local doctors said his injuries were so severe he should be taken to Wichita and he was transferred to St. Francis in Wichita where he died a few hours later.
He was born December 8, 1913 and had lived in the Halstead community all of his life. He was the son of Frederick Wilheim and Pauline Leisy Schowalter. He married Betty Crowe at Dodge City on September 15, 1935. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church and of the Newton Elks Lodge.
Other survivors besides the widow include a son, William A. of Halstead and a daughter, Mrs. Darreld Easter of Wichita; brother, Frederick Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colorado and a sister, Mrs. Dora Goertz of San Marino, California and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday afaternoon at the First Mennonite Church with Rev. Melvin Schmidt and Rev. Roland Goering officiating. Burial was in the Halstead Cemetery.
