He attended the local school and had completed his sophmore year in high school. His scholastic ability was very outstanding. He was a member of Hi-Y, the high school glee club, played violin in the high school orchestra, was in the Youth choir of the Methodist church, and boys' quartet of the Methodist Church. Ray and another boy were on an overnight fishing trip. They came to the dam for minnows to use as bait, and were on their way back upstream when the swift current of rising waters caught their boat and pulled it over the dam. Both boys clutched the boat, but Ray seemed dazed by the fall and soon disappeared.

He was taken into the Methodist Church on January 23, 1938. He is survived by his parents and sister, Janice, his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Abraham Viersen, Greensburg; Mr. & Mrs. C. H. Frost, Halstead.
