Hiram Grant was born in Seneca County, New York August 2, 1819 and died March 4, 1905 at the age of 85 years, 7 months 2 days. When he was four years old he moved with his parents to Ripley County, Indiana. He was converted and joined with the Freewill Baptist at the age of 18. He was married to Hannah Maria Towne on Octobe 18, 1838. To this union 10 children were born. He moved with his family to Lee county, Iowa in 1854. He united with the Christian church in 1869. He came to Kansas in 1882 where he resided until the time of his death. He united with the Christian church in Halstead soon after he came.

For the last 7 years of his life, he made his home with his daughter, Clarissa Rosetta Viersen in Greensburg, Kansas. For the last 4 years of his life he was a cripple and the last year helpless. Through all of his afflictions, he was pataient and uncomplaining, looking forward with an eye of faith to his Heavenly Father.

His first wife, Hannah Towne died May 5, 1880 in Marion Co. Iowa and is buried in the Red Rock cemetery at Pella Iowa. He remarried and his second wife, Sarah A. Crum died March 13, 1900 at the home of her son in Burrton. They were married in 1890. She is buried in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery near Bentley, Kansas, although there is no tombstone by her grave.
