Steele, Bertha M. Hosie
Halstead Independent
Bertha May Steele, 71, died at the Halstead Hospital of congestive heart failure on March 8, 1985. She was the daughter of Harrison Welcome and Daisy Huitt Hosie and was born in Newborn Township, Dickinson County, Kansas. She grew up in the Abilene, Kansas community and graduated from Abilene High School in 1934.
She was a graduate of the Halstead School of Nursing with the May 17, 1940 class. She married Alva Malcolm Steele on May 17, 1941 at New Basel Church, Elmo, Kansas. She was a registered nurse who did private duty nursing until her retirement in 1979. She had been a Halstead resident since 1937. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Twilight Club, Fairview Club, GMH Extension Unit, United Methodist Women, Keystone Sunday School Class, Deborah Circle, 60 Plus Club and Halstead Nurses Alumi Association, all of Halstead; District IV Nurses Assoc, Kansas Nurses Association and the Harvey County Red Cross.
Survivors: husband, Alva of the home; one son, Duane Alva Steele, Hutchinson; three daughters, Carole Maureen Becker, Loveland, Colorado; Marlene Ann Richter, Bloomington, Illinois and Donita Mae Cohorst, Marysville, Kansas; two brothers, James H. Hosie and Dean W. Hosie, both of Abilene; two sisters, Annie E. Tischhauser, Abilene and Velma A. Gordon, Durham, Kansas; three granddaughters and six grandsons. One brother, Richard E. Hosie preceded her in death.
Services were held at the Church with Burial in Halstead Cemetery.
