Wilmore, Waldo W.

The Newton Kansan

Waldo W. Wilmore, 71, Topeka, former Halstead resident and a member of the Hertzler Research Foundation for the past 20 years, died Saturday, May 21, 1983 at a Topeka hospital after a heart attack. He was born June 15, 1911 at Halstead, son of Charles and Rachel Hoover Wilmore. He married Hilda M. Adrian on January 19, 1935 at Moundridge.

He graduated from Halstead High school in 1930. He was a teacher in the Moundride schools and was principal of schools and was principal of Washington Grade School in Newton for seven years. He served with the United States Navy during World War II on the Naval aircraft U.S.S. Cowpens. He moved to Topeka after his discharge from the Navy and was the executive director of Kansas Lung Association for 18 years, retiring in 1976.

He was a member and deacon of First Presbyterian Church, a member of Rotary International, was on the board of Friends of Reinisch Rose Garden and was a volunteer and member of Friends of the Topeka Library.

Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Carol Franznick, Tuscon, Arizona and Kathy Wilmore, Topaka; one son, Dr. Douglas Wilmore, Boston, Massachusetts; sister, Ardis Wimore, Topeka; and four grandchildren. Mrs. Margaret Wilmore and Mrs. Evelyn Wilmore Jones, both of Halstead, are his sisters-in-law.

Memorial services were held Monday afternoon, May 23, at the church with Dr. Kenneth Maulin conducting. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Newton, Kansas.
