Knox, John

Halstead Independent

The remains of John Knox, brief mention of whose death occured on March 3, 1912 in Texas arrived here Thursday and was taken to Cheatum undertaking rooms to be prepared for burial.

The funeral was held Friday morning from the Methodist Church and were conducted by Rev. J. V. Hawk. In spite of the stormy weather there were a goodly number of friends and old neighbors present to pay the last tribute of respect to his memory.

John Knox was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Dodson Knox, early settlers in Lakin township, where John was born June 28, 1882. After reaching manhood he followed the carpenter trade for several years and was employed in the Bridge and Building Service of the Santa Fe.

He enlisted in the U. S. Army at Hutchinson February of 1906 and was sent to Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis from where he was transferred to San Francisco. Later he was sent to Monterey, California and from there to Nome, Alaska, where he was stationed for two years. Last summer he was moved to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where he died near the close of his seconnd enlistment of pneumonia.

John was a great ball pitcher during the early manhood and was Halstead's star player for several seasons.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Barbara Knox, and a sister, Mrs. Fred Haiber, the father having died in March 1894.
