Wendling, Erma Lura King

Erma Lura King Wendling, 99, a resident of Halstead for 91 years died October 3, 1997 at Kidron Bethel Village, Newton where she had resided for several years. She was born July 14, 1898 at Ancona, Illinois, daughter of Albert Warner and Irene Wallis King. She moved to Halstead with her parents in 1904 and attended schools in Halstead, graduating in 1917.
Following her graduation, she worked for Dr. E. J. McKee, a dentist in Halstaad. She was an accomplished pianist and played during the silent movies at the movie theater in Halstead. She was a homemaker and worked for the Hertzler Clinic in Halstead in the medical records department until her retirement. She loved to crochet and play cards and entertained both family and friends by reciting poems she had learned as a young girl.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church; the Sacred Heart Altar Society; Berle Club; Halstead Hospital Auxiliary; the Hertzler Clinic Employees Association; Halstead Historical Society; American Legion Post # 231 Auxiliary and the H.A.O. Club all of Halstead.
She was a gold star mother, the 1982 Halstead Old Settlers queen and a winner of the Old Settlers essay contest sponsored by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
She married Felix Wendling in 1919 in Halstead. He died February 5, 1976. Survivors: one son, Thomas wendling; one daughter, Marjorie Bergere, both of Halstead; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Leland Wendling and Donald Wendling, an infant brother and a sister, Velma Garrett.
The rosary was Sunday at Kaufman Funeral Home and the funeral mass was at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial was in the Halstead Cemetery.
