Ewy, Douglas J.

Douglas J. Ewy, 47, Boise, Idaho, formerly of Halstead, died Thursday, June 14, 2001 of a heart attack while playing golf in Nampa, Idaho. He was born August 4, 19153 at Newton to Ralph L. and Doris Mueller Ewy.
He was a 1971 graduate of Halstead High School. He grew up playing sports and was a gifted athlete. He was awarded a baseball scholarship to Emporia State University where he received national "All-American" honors. Following graduation from Emporia State in 1975 he served as an assistand baseball coach for the Hornets. While in college he discovered his lifelong passion, golf.
Doug worked for Can-For USA in Halstead. This job eventually sent him to Boise, Idaho in 1985. He met his wife, Karen L. Smith, upon his arrival in Boise. They were married October 12, 1989.
He later went to work at Simplot Meat Production transferring to Diversified Products Group and finally to AgriBusiness where he was an account manager for Agrisource.
Survivors: include his wife, Karen, and feline daughter Taz; his parents, Ralph and Doris Ewy, Halstead; three brothers, LeRoy Ewy, Halstead; Jerry Ewy and wife Cyndie, Valley Center; and Ken Ewy and his wife, Jane Ann, Salina; a sister, Carol Rose and her husband, Tom, Halstead; 17 nephews and nieces and 11 great nephews and nieces.
Services will be held Thursday June 21, 2001 at the First Mennonite Church, Halstead, with the Rev. Robert Suderman and Rev. Cleo Koop presiding. Kaufman Funeral Home, Halstead, is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in the Halstead Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Douglas J. Ewy Memoria Fund at Kansas State University or Emporia State University in care of the funeral home.
