Sanford A. Smith, 92, Halstead, died July 5, 2004 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston. He was born April 1, 1912 at Kiowa, son of Frank Sanford and Adah Isabelle Humphrey Smith.
He was superintendent for Wichita Water Depaartment Well Field rural Halstead for 33 years.
He was married to Zephalena Davis of Alva, Oklahoma on April 1, 1933. She survives.
He was a member, Elder in Session Sunday school teacher and treasurer of First Presbyterian Church, Halstead. He was a member of Halstead Masonic Lodge, 32nd Degree Mason, Order of the Eastern Staar Chapter 5 of Newton for 50 years. He served for two terms on the Halstead City Council and was a member of the school board of rural Mayflower District 34. He and Zephalena were Old Settlers King and Queen in 1992.
Survivors: wife of the home; three sons, Frank Sanford Smith III, Plano, Texas; Edwin Burnell Smith, Bella Vista, Arkansas and Wilbur Arthur Smith, Overland Park, Kansas; daughter Alice Claire Considine, Halstead; four brothers, Frank Sanford Smith Jr., Las Vegas, Nevada; Thaine Harris Smith, Long Beach, California; Robert Smith, Freemont, Nebraska; Edwin Smith, Cordell, Oklahoma and a sister, Margaret Littell, Burbank California; 11 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbur Smith; sister, Elsie Dial, two half brothers, Glenn Smith and H. T. Smith and a half sister, Gayle Buck.
Services will be July 8 at the Church. Burial will be in the Halstead Cemetery.
