Zephalena D. Smith, 87, of Halstead, died May 5, 2005 at Newton Medical Center, Newton. She was born December 12, 1917 in Aalva, Oklahoma to Francis Marion and Zepha Vestal Davis. She married Sanford Arthur Smith at Alva Oklahoma on April 1, 1933. He died July 5, 2004.

She was a clerk at Johnny's Grocery and at Woolcott;s IGA and worked at the Halstead Bank. She then pursued an education degree and was a 1969 Graduate of Hutchinson Community College and a 1917 graduate of Wichita State University. She taught at the Institute of Logopedics, Wichita, at Bentley grade school, Bentley, was a substitute teacher at Halstead High School and a proofreader at the Halstead Independent, Halstead. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church; Lakin Happy Homemakers EHU; Halstead Hospital Auxiliary, all of Halstead; Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 5 in Newton and former member of the American Association of University Women. She and her husband were Old Settler's King and Queen in 1992.

Survivors: sons, Frank and wife, Gwen, Plano, Texas; Burnell Smith and wife, Ellen, Bella Vista, Arkansas; and Wilbur and wife Diane, Overland Park, Kansas; daughter, Alice Considine, Halstead; 11 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Cecil, Ivan, Danchel, Leo, Doris, Bill, Otis and Frank Davis and a sister, Vesta Arndt.

Memorial services were held at the church with Rev. Kent Adrian officiating. A family committal service was at the Halstead Cemetery.
