Koehn, Elton S.

Harvey County Independent

Elton S. Koehn, 90, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Sunshing Meadows in Buhler, Kansas. He was born on July 7, 1919 near Halstead to Simon and Elizabeth (Koehn) Koehn, the second of six children. He lived most of his life in Halstead and was a member of Firs Mennonite Church in Halstead. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in North Africa, French Morocco and Sicily. After being honorably discharged in 1944, he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in Newton, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed gardening, wood carving, fishing, puzzles and most of all, his family.

He married Martha Wedel in Topeka on October 14, 1944. He is survived by his wife of 65 years; children, Judy Pauls (Steve Howell) and Kathy Koehn (Mick Groom) of Hutchinson, Steve Koehn of Portland, Oregon; and Rob Koehn (Carol Elkins) of Walton; five granddaughters. Othere survivors: brothers, Virgil Koehn of St. Helena, Oregon and Boyd Koehn of Halstead; sisters, Margaret Ann (Eldon) Jantz, Chico, California and Geneva (Juneau) Bell of San Rafael, California. He was preceded by a sister, Dorothea Longley.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday at the church in Halstead with Pastor Cleo Koop officiating. Burial will be in the Halstead Cemetery.
