Obituary

Dorothy C. Cooper, 88, lifetime resident of the Burrton area died March 20, 1991 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born January 15, 1903 at rural Sedgwick, the daughter of Charles H. and Ella Carter Taylor. Because of the death of their mother, she and her sister, Beulah and her brother Harold were raised by their uncle and aunt, Lewis and Mary Chamberlain.

she attended District 21, Harvey County Elementary School and graduated from Burrton High School in 1923. She received a Special Profieiency in Primary-Kindergarten Teaching Ceretificate from Kansas State Teachers College (Now Emporia State University) on June 1, 1925, and taught school in several Kansas towns, including McPherson, Kanss City, Murdock and Bentley. By taking summer school at the University of Colorado, the University of Arkansaa and the Teachers College of Connecticut during the summers of 1929-
1935, she was able to receive her bachelor of science degree in education from KSTC on July 29, 1938.

On June 3, 1939, she married Fredrick Cooper at Valparisok, Indiana. He died August 30, 1958.

After returning to the family farm near Burrton to live, Mrs. Cooper worked in many areas. She worked at the Hertzler Clinic in Halstead; for Boeing in Wichita, and she and her sister, Beulah, ran the Mary L. Home in Burrton for several years. In her retirement she enjoyed traveling, especially a trip to the Holy Land.

She was a member of the Burrton United Methodist Church, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher, the Burrton United Methodist Women, the O.A.O. Club and Past Matrons of Burrton and the OES of Halstead. She retained an active membership in all these organizations until she moved to the Buhler Sunshing Home in March of 1988.

Services were held Saturday afternoon at the United Methodist Church, Burrton, conducted by the Revs. Al Hysom and Robert Walter. Burial was in Star Cemetery, Rural Burrton, Kansas.
