Malleis, Margaret
Halstead Independent
Margaret E. Malleis, 89, Halstead, died Wednesday August 14 1991 at Regency Health Care Center, Halstead. She was born April 7, 1902 at Halstead, the daughter of Gottfried and Emma Cook Malleis. She was a lifetime resident of
Halstead.
She was a 1920 graduate of Halstead High School. She worked as a teller for the Farmers State Bank in Halstead in the early 1920's. She then worked for the Walter Lee Insurance Agency in Halstead before beginning to help her father in the retail clothing store he owned. She took over operation of the Malleis Clothing Store, on Halstead's Main Street where the Sweet Shoppe is now located, when her father died July 25, 1942. Her father had founded the store in 1887.
In addition to operating the store, she also did income tax returns, was a notary public and handled driver's license applications until drivers were required to make applications at Newton.
She moved to Regency Health Care Centere January 1, 1978. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Halstead.
Survivors include her sister, Edith Cocchini, San Jose, California. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry, Harry, Otto and Ed and a sister Ida.
Graveside services were held August 19 at the Halstead Cemetery. Burial was in Halstead Cemetery.
