Challans, Johanna L.

Halstead Independent

Johanna L. Challans, 95, Halstead, died August 18, 1992 at Regency Health Care Center, Halstead where she had resided for the last five yuears. She was born July 25, 1897 at Halstead, the daughter of Alfred and Katie Krehbiel Seiler. She was a 1914 graduate of Halstead High School. In 1915 she taught a rural school near Meade, Kansas and later at a rural school north of Newton. During WWI she served as a student army nurse at Ft. Filey. She then taught at several rural schools in the Halstead area. She received her B.S. in science from Kansas University and later her masters in science from Kansas State.

She married Albert Ross Challans August 8, 1927 at Halstead. He died December 31, 1964.

After 1930, she taught for many years at Halstead High School and also for the Halstead School of Nursing. After leaving Halstead, she taught at the high school in Wilcox, Arizona. In 1958 she and her husband moved to Dodge City where she taught at St. Mary's of the Plains College as a science instructor until her retirement in 1984, when she moved back to Halstead because of failing health.

As a child she attended the German Methodist Church in Halstead and became a member in 1912. Later when that church was affiliated with the First Methodist Church in Halsteaad, she became a member of that church. She became a member of the Methodist Church in Dodge City while she resided there. She was an avid bird watcher and was a member of the Audubon Society. She continued to take part in the annual Christmas Bird count until her illness. After her retirement she traveled in Alaska, Switzerland and Mexico and took an interest in the bird life in those countries. She was a member of the OES, Chapter, 407 of Halsted, having served as Worthy Matron.

She is survived by a sister, Lydia J. Mayfield, Halstead and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Elma Seiler and foor brothers, Carl, Albert, Paul and Willard.

Services will be held Thursday at Kaufman Funeral home. Burial will be in the Halsted Cemetery.
