McBurney, Edward Cleland

Halstead Independent

Edward Cleland McBurney, 87, LaMesa, California, husband of Virginia Vaughn, formerly of Halstead, died Wednesday March 9, 1994 at LaMesa.

He was born September 5, 1906 in Newton, the son of Cleland H. McBurney and Blanche Yeomans McBurney. A former Newton resident, he formed the McBurney and Goodman Construction Company in 1951. The Korean Conflict terminated his company and forced him return to active duty.

He attended Bethel College and earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering from Kansas State University. He was employed 22 years in the Civil Service, and active duty with the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1956, retiring as Captain, U.S. Naval Reserve. His service was with the 73rd Seabee Battalion in the South Pacific during World War II where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He retired from Civil Seervice as Director of Maintenance and Utilities at the Naval Air Station, North Island at San Diego, California.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in San Diego, California; Newton Masonic Lodge AF & AM Lodge No. 1421, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Newton, National Socidty of Professional Engineers, Kansas State Board of Technical Professions, Society of American Military Engineers , the Retired Officers Association and the Heartland Chapter in El Cajon, California.

He married Virginia Vaughn in Halstead on August 23, 1931. She survives. Other survivors; two sons, Cleland McBurney, Kingman and Thomas McBurney, LaMesa, California; one daughter, Marilyn Grover, San Diego, California, 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, March 12 at Petersen's Funeral Home, Newton. Burial was in the Halstead Cemetery.
