Wright, Laurence

Robert Laurence "R.L." Wright, 91, Sedgwick, died Tuesday at Friendly Acres in Newton, where he had been living for the last year and a half. He was born June 2, 1903 at Shelbyville, Kentucky, the son of David Owen and Carrie Coleman (French) Wright.

He was a teacher and principal at the Sedgwick elementary school from 1935 until he retired in 1971. The elementary school is now named after him, the R. L. Wright Elementary School. After his retirement, he wrote a weekly column School Days, for the Sedgwick Pantagraph until failing eyesight forced him to quit.

Mr. Wright was a Member of the Sedgwick United Methodist Church, the Sedgwick Booster Club, the Sedgwick Senior Citizens Center, the National Education Association and the Kansas National Education Association.

He married Frances Fee August 5, 1926. She died in 1968. He married Helen Tanner Jenkins in 1969. A son, Bob Wright, died in 1974.

Besides his wife of the home, he is survived by a son, Larry Wright, Arlington, Texas; daughter, Marilyn Hodgson, Nickerson, Kansas; 3 step-daughters, Marlene Taylor, Helen Cumley and Carmen McLinn; a daughter-in-law, Mary Sue Wright; two sisters, Lulu Hornbaker, Sylvia, Kansas and Mildred Minnis, Stafford, Kansas; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 14 step great-grandchildren and one step great-great grandchild.

Services were Friday, February 10, 1995 at the Sedgwick United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery at Sedgwick.
