Maxwell E. "Bud" Sloop, 66, Wichita, formerly of Halstad, died Wednesday, December 4, 1996 at Columbia Halstead Hospital in Halstead. He was born September 9, 1930 at Lyndon, Kansas, the son of Charles Hemple and Helen Duff Sloop. A resident of Wichita since 1985, he was retired director of the Hertler Research Foundation and Kansas Learning Center for Health in Halstaad.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Wichita; Halstead Lions Club; Past USD 440 Board of Education member; Charter member of the Wedgewood Golf Course; Board of Directors, Halstead; Kansas State High School Activities Association board member; Kansas High Gymnastics Judge and Fooball Referee; Sigma Phi Epsilon; Inducted into the Baker University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987; namesake of the Maxwell Sloop Outstanding Teacher of the year Award presented annually by the Kansas Learning Center for Health. He was the driving force behind the completion of the new Kansas Learning Center for Health as well as the Wedgewood Golf Course, both at Halstad. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Korean War.

On June 2, 1957, he married Nancy J. White at Baldwin City, Kansas. She died May 4, 1983. On December 28, 1985, he married Patricia M. Martin at Wichita. She survives.

Other survivors: daughters, Karla Bunton, Whitney, Texas; Janis Holmes, Suwanee, Georgia and Marilyn Bunton, Whitney, Texas; stepdaughters, Melanie Jenny, Brookville; Deanna Martin, Dallas, Texas; Alaina Martin, San Diego, California; sister, Margaret Sloop, Osage City; stepsisters, Myrna McKinley, Topeka; Judy Cregut, Topeka; step brothers, David Cregut, Lyndon and Steven Cregut, Topeka, 8 grandchildren.

Memorial service was Saturday, December 7 at First United Methodist Church, Halstead. Burial was in Halstead Cemetery, Halstead, Kansas.
