Comes, Jack

Harvey County Independent

Jack Comes, Burrton, died Saturday, January 11, 1997 at Columbia Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born in Burrton, the son of Clyde and Grace Everett Comes. A lifetime Burrton resident, he was a appointed assistant postmaster in Burrton in 1934 and from 1936 to 1941. He was later, a rural mail carrier, until his retirement. He was a graduate of Burrton High School and attended Emporia State Teacher's College.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion in Burrton, the Halstead-Burrton VFW and the Grand Lodge AF&AM of Kansas, both in Halstead and Scottish Rite and Midian Shrine in Wichita. He was currently on the board of director of the State Bank of Burrton. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World Ear II, serving as assistant adjutant on General Patton's headquarters staff, retiring in 1971 as Lieutenant Colonel from the U. S. Army Reserve. He was a member of the Retired Officeer's Assockation.

On December 24, 1943, he married Dorothy V. Cotton in Durham, North Carolina. she died February 18, 1982. He married Mary Ann Keffer on April 9, 1987 in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives.

Other survivors: step-son, Michael Keffer, Springfield, Missouri; stepdaughter, Julie Pittman, Supulpa, Oklahoma; niece, Barbara Burget, Katy, Texas; one great nephew, David Burgert and one great niece, Dr. Susan Burgert Abene, both of Houston. He was preceded in death by one sister, Josephine Marmount.

Services were January 15 at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson. Burial was in Burrton Cermetery.
