Frederick L. "Sug" Jones, 82, Burrton, died Saturday, May 24, 1997 at Columbia Halstead Hospital. He was born March 31, 1915 at Burrton, he was the son of Charles R. and Beulah B. Frederick Jones. He graduaged from Burrton High School in 1933 and worked for Mel Edwards Grocery until 1939. He then moved to Oakland, California and was employed by Andrew Williams Stores and Richmond Shipyards. A lifelong Burrton resident, he was an inspector for Boeing Aircraft of Wichita for 19 1/2 years before retiring in 1970.
He was a member of First Christian Church and the American Legion Post 196, both of Burrton; the Halstead Masonic Lodge 46; the Hump Pilots Association and the Eastern Star Lodge 5 of Newton. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II.
In 1942, he was inducted into the service at San Francisco, California and sent to AAF technical school in Lincoln, Nebraska. He graduated from airplane mechanics in January of 1943 and completed the P-38 airplane mechanics course in February of 1943. He was assigned to 1333rd AAFBU as Crew chief on C-46s. He was awarded three Bronze Stars for campaigns Central Burma, China, India Buria WDGO No. 33 and 40, 1945; Asiatic Pacific Ribbon; four Overseas Bars; Victory Ribbons; Good Conduct Medal, and Air Medal.
On March 24, 1946, he married Winona C. Pearson at Hutchinson. She survives. Other surivors: daughter, Marleah I. Jones, Burrton and Candace L. Brazil, Bath, Ohio; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral was Wednesday, May 28 at First Christian Church with burial in the Burrton cemetery.
