James R. "Jim" Holzer, 70, Newton, father to Deborah K. Stoddard of Burrton, died Monday, March 23 1998 at Newton Presbyterian Manor. He was born May 9, 1927 at Arkansas City, the son of James L. and Alma S. Lauer Holzer. He was a retired heliicopter pilot and Chief Warrant Officer in the United States Army. He flew helicopters for Petroleum Helicopter Inc., Louisiana and also for LifeWatch in Wichita.

He was a member of Firt United Methodist Church; Harvey County Shrine Club; BPOE Lodge No. 706; Whitsell-Finnell Post No. 971 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; American Legion Wayne G. Austin Post No. 2 all of Newton; he was also a member of the Midian Temple, Wichita; Grand Lodge of Kentucky; Retired Officers Association and Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, 32nd Degree. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

On November 30, 1947, he married Nina Lee Dart at Newton. She died February 18, 1998. On September 3, 1977, he married Barbara J. Parker at Houston, Missouri. She died October 27, 1993. Survivors: two other daughters, Suzanne Holzer, Phoenix, Arizona and Denise D. Hayes, Newton; sister, Joan Brodkin, Palos Verdes, California and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenn Holzer.

Services were held March 26 at Broadway-Colonial Funeral Home Chapel, Newton. Burial was in Whitewater Cemetery, rural Whitewater.
