Schirer, Joy Ann

Harvey County Independent

Joy Ann Smith Schirer, 61, Halstead, died Thursday, May 28, 1998 at Kansas Christian Home in Newton. She was born May 23, 1937 in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Frank E. and Christabel Mountjoy Smith. She was a graduate of Newton High School and Wichita University, shere she received her bachelor of arts degree in education. A longtime area resident, she was a retired Newton High School English teacher. She was also a foster mother to several children.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Newton and the American Association of University Women, where she served as past president.

On June 1, 1974, she married Ivan Schirer in Newton. He survives of Halstead. Other survivors: her mother, Newton; brother, John E. Smith, Ridgecrest, California; a sister, Kay Frances Smith, Warsaw, Indiana; two stepdaughters, Teresea Jones, Shawnee and Angela Feleay, Topeka; two stepsons, Michael Schirer, Farmington, New Mexico and Tony Schirer, Osborne; 7 step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Frank E. Smith.

Funeral was June 1 at First Baptist Church in Newton with Pastor Alden Dick presiding. Rosary was Sunday, May 31 at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ken Schuckman of St. Mary's Catholic Church presiding. Burial was in Restlawn Gardens of Memory in Newton.
