Jim Long Found Dead in Topeka

Jim Long, former Burrton resident, was found dead in Topeka Wednesday, apparently the victim of a robbery-murder. Jim, son of Mrs. Clara Long, Burrton, was a member of the 190th Tactical Reconnaissance Group that was transferred from Hutchinson to Topeka last August. His family remained in Haven where they have made their home. Jim drove a Taxi in his off hours.

Topeka Yellow Cab Company officials said they last heard from Long about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, when he radioed he was picking up a fare in downtown Topeka. Jim’s body was found several hours later by a fellow cab driver in tall grass not far from a grade school in east-central Topeka. The victim’s pockets had been turned inside-out, and there was a severe wound on the back of the head from undetermined causes. Long’s cab was found nearby, partially submerged in Deer Creek.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Haven Methodist Church Saturday, May 18th. Burial will be in Burrton Cemetery. Friends may call Friday evening at the Cantwell Chapel, Haven.
