Herlinda Gonzalez, 93, Newton, mother to John Gonzalez, Halstead, died Thursday, July 22, 1999,at Kansas Christian Home in Newton. She was born March 23, 1906 at Chihuahua, Mexico, the daughter of Juan and Manuella Salas Castillo. She was a seamstress, making many items of clothing for people in Newwton. She enjoyed crocheting, altering clothing and baking. She was self-taught in Spanish and English and helped many Spanish speaking people with legal paperwork in Newton.

She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Newton, the Altar Society and Francisco I. Madero Society.

On May 6, 1922, she married Eleodoro Gonzalez. He died April 7, 1988.

Survivors: three other sons, Fred Gonzalez, Newton; Manuel Gonzalez, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Roman Gonzalez, Walton; daughter, Jennie Sanchez, Derby; 18 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and five stepgrandchidren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Mary Margaret Gonzalez.

Funeral was Monday, July 26 at Our Lady of Guadalupe, Catholic Church, Newton, with Father John Hotze presiding. Rosary was Sunday, July 25 at the Church. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholiic Church Cemetery, Newton.
