Obituary

Miss Lucyle J. Jewett, 100 years of age, died at the family home in Halstead on Wednesday morning, September 29, 1999. She was born June 26, 1899 in the same home in which she lived and died, she was the eldest daughter of Henry W. "Harry" and Rachel Adella (Smith) Jewett. She graduated from Halstead High School in 1917, and attended Salt City Business School in Hutchinson. She worked as a U.S. Postal clerk before working for the Halstead School District as a secretary from which she retired in 1964.

For years, she was often seen walking through town with her dark hair wrapped in a long braid around her head and a basket over one arm, for she never owned a car. Miss Jewett, a lover of books, was an avid reader as well as an author of poetry, philosophy and novels. Her library of books was her most treasured possession. She loved classical music and composed some in her earlier years.

Well-known in the community for her quilting, applique work, and use of color in her quilt tops, she won many awards at the Kansas State Fair over the years, and was a honorary member of the Prairie Quilt Guild in Wichita.

She was the oldest member of the First United Methodist Church in Halstead; a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a life member of the Jewett Family of America.

Survivors include two nephews, Mel Jewett, Overland Park and Rich Jewett, Colby; a niece, Elinor Kent, Overland Park; and numerous great nieces and nephews, including Mitch Jewett of Halstead. She was preceded in death by a sister, Inez Thomasson, and one brother, Jay Jewett.

Funeral was Saturday, October 2 at the First United Methodist Church, Halstead, with the Rev. James Mardock presiding. Special music was performed by organist Carolee Flask and pianist Joyce Hanes. Burial was in Halstead Cemetery.
