Obituary

Jessie Winifred Payton Johnson, 81, Newton, formerly of Halstead, died Wednesday, June 23, 1999 at Friendly Acres Retirement Community, Newton. She was born July 24, 1917 at Depew, Oklahoma, the daughter of Jesse Ralph and Mary Parks Widdoes Payton. A Halstead resident before moving to Newton in 1990, she was a homemaker and retired head cook at the Halstead Hospital. She was a member of First United Methodist Church at Halstead.

On August 24, 1942, she married Ernest Clarence Johnson at San Diego, California. He died Januaray 24, 1999.

Survivors: two sons, David Johnson, Mulvane, and Roger Johnson, Wichita; five daughters, Naney Horton, Nickerson; Barbara Koehn, Santa Marta, Columbia, South America; Patricia Moffitt, Ft. Benning, Georgia; Diann Mason, Arkansas City and Judy Handley, Wichita; sister, Hermoine Milleson, Lees Summitt, Missouri; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jay Payton and two sisters, Flora Payton and Theoma Stephenson.

Funeral was Saturday, June 26 at Kaufman Funeral Home,Halstead with the Rev. James Mardock presiding. Burial was in Halstead Cemetery.
